Using Top Sites in Safari 4

The Safari 4 Web browser has a feature called Top Sites that will create a homepage for you based on the Web pages you visit most often. You can also customize this page to permanently show pages you choose.

To see your Top Sites page, choose History, Show Top Sites or use the keyboard shortcut Command+1. You can also click on a button in the toolbar that looks like 12 squares in a grid. You will see a 3D grid of 12 Web pages, plus some buttons at the bottom.

As you roll over each item, you will see the name of the page and the full URL at the bottom of the window. Click on any one of the items and the page will jump to that Web page.

The sites shown will change depending on which Web sites you have been going to most recently. But you can add pages that will stick and remain there permanently.

One way to manually add a page is to go to the Web page you wish to add and choose Bookmarks, Add Bookmark. Then choose Top Sites from the pull-down menu to add that page to it rather than a bookmarks list.

You can customize Top Sites by clicking on the Edit button at the bottom left. Then each page shown will have a X and a pin button at the top left. Click the X button to permanently remove the page. Click the pin button to indicate that the page should always be shown.

You can also click and drag the pages around the grid to reposition them. If you have another browser window open, you can click on the address or site icon in the address bar and drag it over to the first window to add it.

While editing, at the bottom right of the Top Sites page you can select the number of pages to be shown by clicking Small, Medium or Large. When you are done editing, click the Done button at the lower left corner.

If you like the Top Sites page, you can make it your default by going to Safari, Preferences and then looking at the General preferences. Select Top Sites in either "New windows open with" or "New tabs open with" or both.

You can also go directly to a 3D view of your browsing history. Just click in the Search field at the bottom right corner of Top Sites to go there. You can scroll through all of your history, or narrow it down by typing a search term.

One of the primary benefits with Internet Explorer 8 is its seamless integration into Windows 7. New tabs are automatically shown as separate windows in your taskbar when hovering over the Internet Explorer icon. The other benefit of Internet Explorer 8 is that most web designers have to develop with this browser in mind. This means almost everything supports Internet Explorer 8 and those that do not will probably shortly.

The primary disadvantage of Internet Explorer is that it is considered slower are more resource intensive than other browsers on the market. The other drawback to Internet Explorer is its security. Though it is considered just as secure as other browsers it is more frequently the target of attacks. This means you have to update it more often to keep your version secure.

The disadvantage to Firefox is that it is still not fully supported by all webware and select websites. Their support is increasing as their market share climbs and most web designers try to accommodate for Firefox.

Safari 4

Safari's popularity is mostly due to it being standard on all apple computers, though its PC version has gained some popularity.

Safari's claim to fame is the way it looks, and the way it makes web pages look. The text will look a smoother; the forms will look nice and clear and even the buttons look better. It is also one of the fastest browsers available.

The main disadvantage to Safari is its limited support. Older websites and webware are notorious for having issues with Safari and if you are not web savvy this could be frustrating.

a) Address field

Allows you to enter or display the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for a webpage. An URL represents the unique address for a file located on the internet. b) Autofill Forms Button

Autofill forms button can be looked both as a convenient and also as a dangerous feature.
This feature allows you to add your already type-in data to the targeted fields. But when using Autofill, please be mindful of the information you are providing. c) Back Button

Is Safari perfect? Apple updates Safari web browser for iOS 5.0

The next version of Apple’s operating system for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad will include an updated web browsing experience.

First up, there’s a new Reader mode which reformats web pages to better fit the screen on your mobile device. You can also grab a link from any page to email the contents of a story to a contact.

Second, Apple is unveiling a new feature called Reading List, which works like Instapaper or Read It Later. We had a hint that this was coming recently, and basically it allows you to mark stories you want to read later in your desktop or mobile browser and continue reading later on another device.

In other words, you could mark a story on your iPhone and continue reading on an iPad. Reading List also supports the desktop Safari web browser.

However, static images do not do justice to some of the nuances of reality, using a function. Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines.

In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center.

Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting.

Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry:
“The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8.

I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.)
When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

The NY Times profiles Opera Software, the company that distributes the Opera browser for multiple platforms. According to the article, however, Apple is not allowing an iPhone version of the browser into the App Store:

Mr. von Tetzchner said that Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser.

Gruber speculates that it could have to do with the Javascript interpreter or, more clearly, that Apple has been restricting apps that compete directly with some of their built in iPhone apps such as Safari.

Apple has been criticized for its decision to restrict certain applications from the App Store, and this suggests users shouldn't expect any other web browser alternatives (such as Firefox) to appear in the App Store at any point in the near future.

It's not like we didn't know this, but it's still dispiriting to see it in print. It looks like Opera, maybe just for kicks, wrote a version of their Opera Mini browser for the iPhone. "But Apple won't let the company release it because it competes with Apple's own Safari browser," according to a profile in the New York Times.

There are a lot of great things about Apple's iPhone App Store, but this isn't one of them - Apple's habit of stomping on any third-party developer who they feel is getting in their way. Opera Mini has advantages over Safari, believe it or not: it's faster for people who don't want to zoom in and out constantly. But even if it doesn't, what's the harm in letting people make the choice? It's not like Opera isn't a well-known and reliable brand. Apple, of course, will cite "confusion," but that smacks to me like assuming their users are at a very low intellectual level.

Web analytics firm GetClicky reported that Chrome rapidly picked up three per cent of browser views in the week following its launch, but that usage is now down to half that figure.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox both saw use fall in the first week after Chrome's launch, but this proved short-lived. The two browsers now have market share of around 60 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.
Apple's Safari currently has around five per cent of the market, and Opera has 1.5 per cent, according to GetClicky.
The figures are backed up by vnunet.com's own research, and suggest that Google has a long way to go before it can take on IE and Firefox, even with help from promised versions built for Apple and Linux users.

But, with the iPhone 2.1 OS, Apple has taken the first step to making web-applications just as powerful and convenient as natively installed mobile applications.
A little-known feature has apparently been rolled out with the iPhone 2.1 OS update, enabling users to use web-apps in full-screen mode without firing up their iPhone Safari browser. The iPhone has offered the option of saving a web-app as a home screen icon (Add to Homescreen), and even allowed for the bookmarking regular webpages as homescreen icons. But, with iPhone 2.1 OS, web-apps can apparently be saved to the homescreen and can be run independently of Safari.

Google Releases Gears Plug-in Beta for Apple Safari Browser

Google Gears is now available for Apple’s Safari Web browser. Gears is a plug-in that extends Safari browser to create a richer platform for web applications. For example, webmasters can use Gears on their websites to let users access information offline or provide you with content based on your geographical location.

Gears was designed to be used on both Google and non-Google sites. A number of web applications currently make use of Gears, including two Google products: Google Reader and Google Docs. Additionally, Zoho and Remember the Milk have been using Gears since its original launch.

Released under the BSD license, Gears is free and open source software. Currently, Gears is supported on Google Chrome and IE 6+ on Windows XP and Vista, IE Mobile 4.01+ on Windows Mobile, Safari 3.1.1+ on Mac OS X 10.4+ and Firefox 1.5+ on multiple platforms. Opera ASA recently announced that the new Opera Mobile 9.5 will also support Gears.

Users are cautioned that Gears is still BETA (testing phase) and not an official release. “We are excited to share a beta version of Gears for Safari with you!! We would love for you to install it and test it and file bug reports so we can polish it and find all the corner cases,” - said Google’s Jeremy Moskovich on the Gears users mailing list Monday.

There are several major API components to Gears including a Database module (powered by SQLite) that can store data locally, a WorkerPool module that provides parallel execution of JavaScript code in the background to improve performance, and a Desktop module that lets web applications interact more naturally with the desktop. March 27, 2008 (Computerworld) Developers responsible for Apple Inc.'s Safari browser engine and Opera Software ASA's flagship browser raced yesterday to announce that in-development versions passed the new Acid3 Web test with flying colors.
A Mozilla Corp. executive, while acknowledging that the company's browser is not as compliant with Acid3 as its rivals, called the test "a puzzle game" and said Mozilla would press ahead with work on Firefox 3 rather than devote resources to improving its Acid3 score.
Acid3, which was finalized earlier this month by the Web Standards Project, checks how closely a browser follows certain standards, particularly specifications for Web 2.0 applications, as well as standards related to the DOM (Document Object Model), CSS2 (Cascading Style Sheets) and SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics).
Yesterday, Opera was the first to announce that an unreleased version of its browser had received a score of 100 -- out of a possible 100 -- on the Acid3 test. "Today we reached a 100% pass rate for the first time!" said Lars Erik Bolstad, who heads the core technology group at Opera, in a post to a company-supported blog. "There are some remaining issues yet to be fixed, but we hope to have those sorted out shortly."
Opera has not issued a public version of the development edition that passed Acid3, although Bolstad said one would be made available on the Opera Labs site "within the next week or so."
Meanwhile, WebKit matched Opera yesterday, then upped the ante. Late Wednesday, developers working on WebKit, the open-source project that provides the core engine for Apple's Safari browser, not only claimed that their newest build scored 100 out of 100 on Acid3, but released Mac OS X and Windows versions so users could see for themselves.
"WebKit has become the first publicly available rendering engine to achieve 100/100 on Acid3," said Maciej Stachowiak, a Polish developer on the WebKit team, in a post to the group's blog. In an update, Stachowiak claimed that additional tweaks had been made to the engine. "We believe we have a pixel-perfect match for the reference rendering," he said in the update.
The newest Mac OS X and Windows builds can be downloaded from the WebKit site. (Computerworld downloaded the Mac OS X build and confirmed that it scored 100 out of a possible 100 on Acid3.)
Mike Shaver, Mozilla's chief evangelist, however, essentially said Firefox is taking a pass on Acid3 for the moment. "We're almost at the end of the development cycle [for Firefox 3], and I don't want to see people pressuring us into making changes simply for Acid3, or us looking for shortcuts to get a better score," he said in an interview.
In a posting to his blog earlier in the day, Shaver was more specific. "We don't want to be rushing fixes in or rushing out a release, only to find that we've broken important sites or regressed previous standards support, or worse, introduced a security problem," he said. Firefox 3, currently in beta, will likely ship in final form by the end of June, according to Mozilla.
Shaver also criticized the new standards test. "Acid 3, unlike its predecessors, is not about establishing a baseline of useful Web capabilities," he said in the blog. "It's quite explicitly about making browser developers jump. I don't think it's worthless, but I think it could have been a lot more."

iPhone 3G upgraders and anyone having upgraded to the iPhone 2.0 OS on their first-generation iPhone will likely already know that the web-browsing experience, which was undeniably tops in the smartphone market, has been improved. Web pages load faster, regardless of whether 3G, EDGE, or WiFi is being used - overall web-surfing just seems that much speedier.
The web-browsing performance bump has nothing to do with new iPhone 3G hardware, but everything to do with the new Webkit build that the iPhone 2.0 OS utilizes.
We've been expecting as much, and now with a bit of graphical bar-graph help from Daring Fireball, we now have a visual representation of just how much faster the iPhone 2.0 OS's Safari browser is - all thanks to improved Webkit performance.

When browsing the net, I’m safest when I’m using Mozilla’s Firefox 3.0 browser—at least after I’ve tweaked it just a bit. Yup, I have absolutely no doubt about it. I’ve looked at others, and I’m sticking with Firefox.
But instead of just taking my word for it, let’s take a closer look at why I believe this to be true. First, let me describe the contestants.
As I’m principally a Mac user (Leopard 10.5.4), I’m mainly concerned with Firefox and Apple’s own Safari browser, but I’ll also compare them against Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE). I should also note there are significant other options available, not the least of which is the highly-regarded Opera browser. For now, though, I’m going to stick with the top 3 in my comparison: Firefox, Safari, and IE.
As with the comparisons I’ve done here of Windows vs. Linux vs. OS X security, I’m going to explore various user-level differences between the browsers. I do believe, after all, that the determined tech-savvy user would be able to use any of these three browsers quite securely.
In their own ways, all three of these browsers are delivered in an overly trusting configuration. If you’re serious about being secure in your Web browsing habits, it’s clear you’ll need to spend some time fine-tuning each of these products. Despite their claims of providing security features ,when you install these products, they make some serious mistakes.
Chief among the default mistakes is allowing active content (e.g., Javascript, ActiveX) to run by default, from just about any site you might connect to. This, by the way, is the single most important thing to control if you want to make your browser more secure. Nonetheless, I have to give a slight nod here to Firefox for its “safe browsing” feature as well as IE for its security zones, including an “Internet zone” which is at least slightly untrusted.
• Security features:
All three browsers offer some rudimentary security controls in the way of being able to allow or disallow broad categories of content, such as Javascript, Java, or ActiveX. But by default, these features are so broad in their “all or nothing” approaches as to be next to worthless.
Turning off Javascript, for example, just doesn’t work. Today’s Internet applications, by and large, require Javascript in order to run, so I need to enable that for sites I want to do business with. On the other hand, uncontrolled Javascript is a boon to all types of miscreants who want to attack my computer.
Beyond that, IE’s security zones are actually a pretty powerful mechanism for controlling Web content and how it interacts in the browser. Unfortunately, to really get the power from the security zones requires a learning curve that few users will be willing or able to overcome. Firefox’s “safe browsing” feature works in conjunction with an external site (run by Google) to blacklist various Internet sites that are thought to be harboring phishing attacks and other nasties. This is turned on by default, and most users needn’t even be aware it’s there.
Unfortunately, it’s fundamentally a negative validation model that is doomed to eventual failure—think anti-virus signature updates. So this category is a tough call, since all three products are pretty awful.

Almost half the online population is at risk because users have not installed security updates to their browsers, says a study.
The Swiss Institute of Technology, Google and IBM conducted the study and found 600 million users had not updated their browsers.
"Failure to apply patches promptly or missing them entirely is a recipe for disaster," the report said.
Cyber criminals are frequently using websites to attack users, it added.
The report authors recommended that a "best before" date, similar to the food industry, should be introduced to browsers, helping to educate users about the need to "refresh" their browser.

Browsers are often "patched" by software providers to tackle recently discovered flaws and security holes.
Criminals exploit these holes with malicious code hidden in websites to hijack machines.
The study said Firefox users tended to use the most up-to-date versions, while Internet Explorer users were the slowest to update their browsers.
More than 83% of Firefox users were using the latest, most secure browser version, compared to 65% of Safari users, 56% of Opera users and 47% of Internet Explorer users.
The study said that not using the latest version of a browser was only one part of the security issues faced by net users.
'Insecurity iceberg'
Dubbed the "insecurity iceberg", the study said many users were at risk due to vulnerable plug-ins.
Plug-ins are small programs which extend the features and functionality of some browsers.
"Vulnerable plug-ins that are accessible (and exploitable) through the web browser extend the insecurity iceberg and form the part hidden below the water surface," the report authors noted.
The study said users were not updating to the latest version of a browser or plug-in fast enough.
"Our measurement confirmed that web browsers which implement an internal auto-update patching mechanism do better in terms of faster update adoption rates than those without," it said.
The study commended the "single-click" update feature of Firefox's browser as the "most efficient" patching mechanism.

Three weeks after public reports emerge, Apple fixes a critical Safari flaw.

Users of Apple's Safari browser on Windows may be resting easier now that a new release of the software fixes a month-old vulnerability that could have left users open to a so-called "carpet bomb" attack.

While the new Apple Safari 3.1.2 Web browser for Windows fixes a handful of problems, the most notable improvement targets the vulnerability first publicly disclosed by security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani on May 15.

At the time, Dhanjani said Safari allowed a malicious Web site to "carpet bomb" a user's default download directory with a deluge of resource downloads for which a user has not provided consent.

Two weeks after Dhanjani published the finding, Microsoft issued its own advisory, warning Windows users against the potential threat of these files being automatically executed when a user also has Internet Explorer installed.

Apple also suggested a Microsoft technology worsened the problem.

"An issue exists in how the Windows desktop handles executables," Apple wrote in its Safari 3.1.2 security update notes. "Saving an untrusted file to the Windows desktop may trigger the issue, and lead to the execution of arbitrary code."

The fix that Apple had to perform to fix the issue seems relatively straightforward and obvious, however.

"To help mitigate this issue, the Safari browser has been updated to prompt the user prior to saving a download file," Apple stated. "Also, the default download location is changed to the user's Downloads folder on Windows Vista, and to the user's Documents folder on Windows XP."

Safari users on the Mac are not at risk from the same flaw, according to Apple. Neither Apple nor Microsoft were immediately available for comment.

In addition to tackling the carpet bombing issue, the patch also addresses several other vulnerabilities.

Safari 3.1.2 for Windows provides a fix for an issue that could be triggered if a user views a maliciously designed GIF or BMP image. Apple described the flaw as a memory-read error that could lead to the disclosure of memory contents.

There is also a fix of Safari's core rendering engine, WebKit, to protect users against a memory corruption issue resulting from its handling of JavaScript arrays.

"Visiting a maliciously crafted Web site may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution," Apple said. "This update addresses the issue through improved bounds checking."

Apple's Safari browser has been available on Windows since last June. The Safari 3.1 browser debuted in March with Apple claiming it was the fastest browser yet. Earlier this week, Mozilla released its own challenge to Apple's claims with the Firefox 3 browser.

But if the difficulty level is increased - if the file we want to get is inside a member area and opens in a new-separated window, you’ll need a more advanced method: using Safari’s Activity Window (Menu: Window –> Activity or keyboard shortcut: Command + Option + A).

Here are the steps:

Minimize the number of open tabs. The more is usually the merrier, but in this case, I guarantee you’ll be more confused later.
Open the page with the multimedia you want to download.
Open the Activity Window and look at each item on the list.
Find the page which has the multimedia file. You’ll have no problem if there’s only two or three tabs opened.
Search for the file with the multimedia extension (mp3, wav, flv, swf, etc.), or the one with the largest size.
Double click the file while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Control (Windows).
The Downloads window will open showing you the download progress of the file.

Extra Tips

Since some of the files we’re talking about here are in the ‘unusual’ format, there’s an extra file conversion step we need to take to be able to play them in an iPod or another portable player. Sure, you could use any file conversion application available out there, but to save time and computer resources - especially for those who run the oldies, why not utilize an online service to do that? My personal favourite is Zamzar.

Alternatively, you can download one of the free video players that can play .flv (Flash) files (common format for online videos). VLC and Media Player Classic have this functionality.

All you have to do is:

Apple has issued an update for the Windows version of its Safari web browser.

In addition to minor stability fixes, the update addresses four security vulnerabilities in the browser that range in severity from information disclosure to the ability to remotely execute malicious code.

The company is advising all Windows users to install the update, which can be obtained through Apple's software update service or by visiting the company's download site. The update does not affect Mac users.

The most notable of the four security fixes is the so-called 'carpet bomb' condition disclosed by Microsoft earlier this month. That flaw could potentially allow malware that is within a web site designated by Internet Explorer as a trusted site to run without iser input.

Apple said that it solved the problem by removing Safari's ability to automatically launch downloaded files. The company also added an option to the browser's preferences to require user authorization before starting any download.

The download prompt was also part of another fix. Apple used the feature to address a flaw in which files saved directly to the Windows desktop could be automatically launched and potentially used to infect users.

The update changes the default download location to a special folder, rather than directly to the Windows desktop.

Other fixes include a patch for a remote code execution vulnerability in Javascript handling, as well as a vulnerability in which a specially crafted .bmp or .gif could be used to retrieve memory contents and possibly obtain sensitive user data.

Microsoft Warns Of Bug In Apple's Safari

Microsoft issued a security advisory warning users that a flaw in Apple's Safari browser could give remote attackers the ability to install of malicious code on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The issue was first reported May 15 by security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani, who disclosed three vulnerabilities in Safari, one of which allows a remote attacker to litter a user's desktop or Downloads directory with executable files in an attack known as carpet bombing. The glitch enables the Safari browser to download any resource, including malicious content, without the user's consent and places it in a default location.

A successful exploitation of the Safari vulnerability would work in conjunction with a bug in Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser, which security researchers reported more than a year ago. The attack would require a user to visit a malicious Web page while using Safari, which would trigger the carpet bomb attack and allow exploitation of the IE flaw. When combined, both the Safari and IE vulnerabilities allow malicious executables to be run on a victim's computer, which could allow attackers to take complete control of a user's computer.

Dhanjani also reported a third Safari flaw last week, which allows an attacker to remotely steal local files from the user's system. Apple said that it was working to resolve the issue, according to Dhanjani's blog post.

Dhanjani said in his posting that Apple has only promised to repair one of the three vulnerabilities detected last week and has not made clear whether there are any scheduled patches down the road for the Safari "carpet bomb" flaw. Apple did not immediately return correspondence from ChannelWeb.

The security advisory applies to all customers running Safari on Windows, although Microsoft said that the blended threat would not affect customers who have changed the default location where Safari downloads content to the local drive.

Safari is not the default browser of XP or Vista, but must be independently installed.

Microsoft said in its advisory that it was monitoring the issue and would take "appropriate measures" to protect customers, which could include a solution wrapped up in a service pack, as well as a monthly or out-of-cycle update. Microsoft also noted that it is currently working with researchers at Apple to address the issue.

So far, Microsoft claims that it is unaware of any current "loose in the wild" attacks that exploit the vulnerability.

Until an appropriate fix is released, Microsoft recommends that users limit their use of the Safari browser when surfing the Web .

While pundits have been lamenting the fact that Apple's "software update" program on Windows is now pushing Safari 3.1 to users, we thought we'd check out Safari 3.1 to find out if Apple has made any real progress on the Windows version of this browser. After all, it's about the software, right?

We put the Safari 3 beta on Windows through the wringer last summer, and we weren't too terribly impressed. The problems were significant, such that we'd have a hard time recommending the browser to any Windows user. As of last summer, Firefox was still the Windows browser of choice here at Ars. Have things improved for Safari? Wow, have they.

Safari 3.1 is the first non-beta release of Safari for Windows. Along with the Mac version, 3.1 brings support for CSS Web fonts and animations, and it improves existing support for SVG and HTML 5. There are also a handful of performance and stability improvements rolled into the release.

Standards compliance is impressive. Safari 3.1 scores a 75 on Acid 3, compared with a 53 on Firefox 2.0.0.12, a 40 on Opera, and a paltry 12 on IE7 (I only looked at official releases, not betas; Safari on the Mac also scores a 75). Apart from sites using ActiveX and other browser-specific tech (like WM DRM), I had no trouble using sites in my normal browsing rotation, either. I had no trouble accessing American Express, Gmail, Citbank, Yahoo Mail, Digg, etc.

Compliance without stability is pointless, however. Fortunately, Safari 3.1 for Windows is now a stable, usable web browser. We couldn't say that about Safari on Windows before, but now that we've been testing it for a few days, we can tell you this: it's a night and day difference compared to the beta we saw last summer. I've had one crash in two days, and others in the lab report similar results (and there is a building consensus that the problem is caused by Flash). That puts it on the same stability level as the other major Windows browsers that we put through the gauntlet.

Memory usage is good, too. Safari uses about the same amount of memory as Firefox, pre-memory problems. That is, Safari and Firefox have similar memory footprints at startup, but after you use both for several hours, they start to diverge. Firefox's notorious problems with memory "leaks" are to blame, so Safari ends up using 25 to 50 percent less memory, keeping it from getting sluggish and unstable.

We still find it annoying that there's no "new tab" button. Control-T remains the quickest way to open a new blank tab (but you can also double click on the tab bar to get a new tab). Also, we ran into problems trying to add certain buttons to the toolbar. Doing so would consistently fail, but a restart fixed this. I can live with Control-T and the few bugs that will be fixed soon. Apple has bigger fish to fry, though (like fonts), if it wants to accomplish something with this browser on Windows.

Fonts are still a problem. In fact, for me, the fonts are a deal-breaker. Safari 3.1 for Windows continues to use the Mac OS X font anti-aliasing approach rather than the native font anti-aliasing system in Windows (ClearType). The result is text that is often fuzzy, particularly smaller text. Sometimes small text looks bold when it isn't. Setting Safari to "light" anti-aliasing produced the best results for me, but the text was still inferior to what one would see in IE or Firefox on Windows.

I know some readers are going to e-mail me and extol the ways in which Safari's font rendering encapsulates the ephemeral origins of the written word or some other such nonsense, but it comes down to a basic point: all of the anti-aliased text on Windows is rendered using ClearType. When your app uses a different scheme, it looks broken because it looks different.

Apple needs to fix this, because the company is clearly gunning for market share on Windows. Whereas I once thought that Apple's only interest in releasing Safari on Windows was to get developers interested in WebKit and, eventually, the iPhone SDK, I now think Apple is actually pushing to make this a truly competitive Windows browser.

A very fast Safari

Safari is indeed quite speedy. Start time for Safari is fast, but not lightning fast. Unsurprisingly, IE is the fastest browser to start on my Windows Vista test machine by a margin of two seconds; Safari and Firefox are about the same when loaded without extensions (Firefox is slowed somewhat by the 10 extensions I have installed during normal usage, but even then, not enough for me to care). HTML rendering speeds are very quick, too. I wouldn't say that the speed is dramatically different to the extent that I'd switch on those merits alone. Sure, the difference Apple claims looks dramatic, but our testing isn't bearing this out. We'll have a lot more to say on that when we do our complete next-gen browser review.

JavaScript performance is supposed to be one of Safari's strong points, and we have found that to be true on Windows. Safari is very fast, subjectively faster than IE and about as fast as Firefox, perhaps a bit speedier.

Yahoo Buys My Favorite Search Browser Plugin, Inquisitor For Apple Safari

Yahoo has acquired my favorite search browser plugin for Apple Safari, Inquisitor. Inquisitor is an extremely useful search refinement and search aid tool for the Apple browser market. Inquisitor offers autocomplete, refinements, suggestions, and also allows you to add any search engine you like, plus create your own personalized and advanced query operators, much like OpenSearch.

I spoke with Ariel Seidman, the director of product management for this product and he answered a number of questions I had about the acquisition.

David Watanabe is the developer behind Inquisitor, he also is the developer behind a few other popular Mac products including Acquisition P2P, NewsFire RSS, and Xtorrent P2P. I asked Ariel if Yahoo is just buying Inquisitor or all the assets of Watanabe. Ariel told me Yahoo is only buying Inquisitor.

David Watanabe will work for Yahoo as an independent consultant for an unspecified amount of time. The reason is to enable Yahoo's developers to learn the product and help with future upgrades. Watanabe should have more information about his role at Yahoo and what this means for current customers at his blog.

I asked Ariel Seidman why they have decided to acquire the product? He said the answer is basically three fold. First, the way inquisitor handles inline results, especially for navigational queries is very clever. Second, the search plugin allows people to easily integrate 3rd party search engines. Finally, it will expand awareness of Yahoo Search with the Safari browser market.

Seidman explained that Yahoo will be changing Inquisitor to default to Yahoo Search as the primary engine of choice. Yes, you will be able to change the default setting at any time. So if you prefer Live or Google, you can change it to those engines or add your own.

Ariel Seidman said he personally has been using the product since August 2007. He championed the idea of acquiring it at Yahoo and Vish Makhijani, the general manager and senior vice president of Yahoo! Search, backed him. Vish is also a huge fan and user of Inquisitor and supported the idea of acquiring the tool.

Inquisitor is currently monetized through voluntary donations and embedded Amazon affiliate links. Yahoo will remove the affiliate links and stop accepting donations immediately.

Inquisitor will remain a standalone product and continue to be a separate brand from Yahoo. The inquisitorx.com domain will continue to be the location where you download the plugin and will remain there for the foreseeable future.

I asked Ariel if Yahoo would somehow incorporate any of the technology from Inquisitor into Yahoo Search. Ariel said, "it is fair to say that Inquisitor DNA" can show up in Yahoo products in the future. He did not give any specific examples of how or when, but said it was possible.

Finally, Yahoo would not disclose the acquisition price nor did Yahoo expand on any future applications of Inquisitor outside of what I have mentioned above.

Safari Holding Steady Despite Windows Boost

Apple's Safari Web browser has been holding relatively steady in 2008 with about 5.81 percent of the browser market despite the boost it received from additional Windows users this year. In comparison, Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser has been gradually declining compared to its position last year while Firefox has been slowly gaining market share.

Safari held 5.82 percent of the browser market in January, according to data from Market Share. In February, that number dropped to 5.7 percent, and then climbed back up to 5.82 percent in March after Apple began offering Safari 3.1 as part of its software update service for Windows users.

While Safari 3.0 never managed to climb over a 0.07 percent market share, Safari 3.1 for Windows climbed up to a 0.23 percent share by the end of April -- most likely a result of Apple's move to include the browser with other updates.

The sudden increase in Safari for Windows users could turn out to be good news for Apple, but for now it doesn't seem to be making a big impact on the browser's overall market share. With Internet Explorer on the decline at 74.83 percent, however, there's still plenty of market for Safari grab.

PayPal won't block Safari, but browser still considered unsafe

Chicago (IL) - When PayPal's information security chief recently outlined new measures the company will take to battle phishing attacks and online frauds, it became evident that Apple's Safari browser lacks certain basic security features. Some predicted PayPal will block Safari users from accessing the online payment service altogether. A company spokesperson now reassured users that this wasn't the case. However, there are no security features in Safari to protect users from online scams and identity theft.

Over last couple of days, multiple online sources claimed Ebay's PayPal is planning to block Safari users from accessing the online payment service altogether. For example, AppleInsider cited Safari's lack of anti-phishing mechanism and no support for the Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer (EV SSL) certificate as the two reasons that are in direct collision with PayPal's strengthened security policies.

PayPal went on record last night with the Wall Street Journal and explained that it won't, at least at this moment, block Safari users from accessing PayPal. "PayPal is developing features to block customers from logging into PayPal when using obsolete browsers on outdated or unsupported operating systems. An example of such a browser/OS combination might be, for example, Internet Explorer 4 running on Windows 98. In doing so, we better protect our customers from viewing a phishing site through their browser. We have absolutely no intention of blocking current versions of any browsers, including Apple’s Safari, from our website," said Michael Oldenburg, PayPal’s corporate communications spokesman.

That statement however, doesn’t quite help Safari users and you could wonder whether Apple is doing enough to protect Safari users from online frauds.

The story first broke out when online media outlets picked up a white paper published by PayPal's chief information security officer Michael Barret. In this document, Barret singled out the web browser as a key tool in an effort to end to phishing scams. He criticized browsers, without naming them, saying that there was a lack of anti-phishing mechanisms and support for EV SSL certificates. "In our view, letting users view the PayPal site on one of these browsers is equal to a car manufacturer allowing drivers to buy one of their vehicles without seat-belts," Barret wrote.

Phishing is a method of deceiving a user into believing that a certain site or email is genuine to convince users to provide critical information such as login data. Sites like eBay or PayPal have been a popular target in phishing scams.

Barret warned that a browser is the “first and last line of defense” against such fraud attacks. IE7 and Firefox 2 have built-in anti-phishing tools that rely on a mechanism that checks a site against a publicly available, regularly updated black list of known phishing sites. For example, Firefox 2 users can set the preference to check site's authenticity in Google's database. Apple had briefly incorporated Google's database into beta builds of Max OS X Leopard and Safari 3, but has removed this feature from both the operating system and final Safari builds. The feature could be added again in future updates as there are still traces in the code.

EV SSL support comes built-in with IE7 and the upcoming Firefox 3. Users of Firefox 2 can install the Verisign EV Green Bar extension to gain EV SSL certificate support free of charge. When a user visits a site that has an EV SSL security certificate, IE7's address bar turns green, and Firefox 2's gray, meaning the site passed the authenticity checks. A user can then click on a certificate to identify the company running a site, providing another layer of assurance. Safari, however, lacks EV SSL support.

A lack of both anti-phishing mechanisms and EV SSL support puts Safari in the same security category as IE4. Although PayPal says it has no immediate plans to blacklist Safari users, it is obvious Apple should act quickly and provide Safari users with anti-phishing tools and a better handling of security certificates. So far, Apple does not have a great track record in browser security. It took too long until Safari received even the most basic certificate features. If Apple wants to expand its Safari user base and make the browser an alternative to IE and Firefox, it will have to match security features of competing products, no question about it.

We all knew this day was coming as many users have become fed up with Internet Explorer; it’s slow, it’s features are outdated and it used to be full of security holes like swiss cheese but as hackers switch focus that may no longer be the case. Safari and Firefox have gained a lot more traction and are becoming the focus of more attacks, more often.

According to the Washington Post, there were no attacks on Internet Explorer this month but Firefox and Safari both had several vulnerabilities. Mozilla had to release two updates in a span of six weeks to fix five critical security vulnerabilities; all of which were related to JavaScript.

Firefox 2.0.0.13 isn’t affected by the exploits but it’s old news, Firefox 3 Beta 5 is where it’s at; in comparison Firefox 2.0.x is as slow as molasses in winter.

Safari 3.1 was released to patch 13 holes present on Mac OSX, Windows XP and Vista; some of which were related to Quicktime.

Apple still has the brilliant idea to distribute Safari over Apple Update for Windows users so if you forget to uncheck that installation box, you’ll get it installed.

Just because you’ve decided to switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox or Safari doesn’t mean you are necessarily safe any more. Who will be the first to create an alternative "alternative" browser? I’m sure one will be coming soon and in five to ten years after its release, it too will become the target of hackers.

In the original browser wars of the late '90s, Microsoft dominated by bundling its Internet Explorer web browser with Windows, essentially locking out Netscape Navigator, which had triggered the web revolution.

Microsoft's abuse of its operating system monopoly raised the ire of the US Justice Department, but the end result was the same: Netscape faded and Internet Explorer became the standard for browsing.

Flash forward to 2008, and this time it's Apple leveraging its dominant iTunes media player software to get its Safari web browser on to more PC desktops. Safari was launched as a Mac-only browser in 2003, pre-empting Microsoft's dumping of IE for Mac.

Last year Apple released a Windows version, ostensibly to assist developers in creating web applications for the iPhone, which runs a "lite" version of the browser. It trumpeted Safari as the fastest browser on either Mac or Windows.

With the recent release of version 3.1, Apple controversially has included Safari as an option with Windows iTunes updates. Safari is ticked by default as an installation item when a Windows user runs Apple Software Update.

John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla, which makes the open-source browser Firefox, has cried foul, blogging: "What Apple is doing now with their Apple Software Update on Windows is wrong. It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, and that's bad – not just for Apple but for the security of the whole web . . . The likely behaviour here is for users to just click 'Install 2 items', which means they've now installed a completely new piece of software, quite possibly completely unintentionally.

"Apple has made it incredibly easy – the default, even – for users to install ride-along software that they didn't ask for, and maybe didn't want. This is wrong, and borders on malware distribution practices."

Firefox is currently ranked second in the world after IE, but Safari's popularity is increasing, and it could well overtake Firefox in the next few years.

Like Firefox, Safari is an open-source browser. It is based on WebKit, which has just become the first publicly available rendering engine to score a perfect 100 in the Acid 3 test for browser open standards, narrowly beating Opera.

Perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, Microsoft has indicated that Internet Explorer 8 will respect open standards, regardless of whether it works with websites currently optimised for IE 6.

Statistics on Safari's market share vary. According to Net Applications, it had 5.7 per cent of the market in February, compared with 17 per cent for Firefox and 75 per cent for IE. IE's share has been steadily declining from its high of more than 90 per cent.

Safari's rise will be aided by the iPhone and iPod Touch and their "lite" versions of the browser. M:Metrics reports that because of its user-friendly interface, the iPhone already is the dominant mobile device for browsing the web, with 85 per cent of iPhone owners using its web functions, compared with 58 per cent of users of other smartphones.

And StatCounter put the iPhone and iPod Touch's mobile browser market share at just under a quarter of a per cent in the March quarter, equalling Nokia's global share after less than a year of being on sale.

With the recent release of the iPhone software development kit, New York Times tech writer David Pogue described the device as the "third major platform" in computer history after Windows and Mac OS X, while venture capitalist John Doerr, who has established the "iFund" for iPhone software development, predicts it will be bigger than the PC.

It all points to one thing: Safari is heading for a dominant position in the mobile web as well as the desktop.

Mac users aren't limited to Safari, however. In fact, they're spoilt for choice. Other quality browsers for the Mac include Firefox, OmniWeb, Camino, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla.

Apple has released the first version of its browser, Safari, for Windows. Safari 3.1, which was launched on Tuesday, will run on Windows XP or Vista and, of course, Mac OSX. Apple released a beta for the Windows-supporting version in June last year. Apple has claimed that the browser is the fastest available for Windows. In a Tuesday statement, Cupertino said it "loads web pages 1.9 times faster than [Internet Explorer] 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2 [and] runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers". Safari 3.1 brings the Apple experience to Windows

The good folks over at Ars Technica decided to check out Safari 3.1 for new goodness fresh out from Mac-land. Their verdict? They were blown away with the improvements since Safari 3.0.

The chief kudos here appears to be with that Safari 3.1 brings in support for CSS Web fonts and animations, as well as improving on existing support for SVG and HTML 5. Performance improvements rolled into this release certainly did not hurt, but standards compliance is where it really shines.

Clip it

Now you can turn any web page into a Dashboard widget. Click the Web Clip button next to the address field in Safari and select exactly what you want your new widget to display. Then click Add, and Safari sends your Web Clip widget to Dashboard, where you can view it alongside your other widgets. You can even customize its border using built-in styles on the back of the widget. Your Web Clip widget is “live” and will update as frequently as the page from which it came.

Pick up the tabs

With tabbed browsing in Safari, you can open and switch between multiple web pages in a single window. Drag and drop your tabs to rearrange them, open one in a new browser window, or merge all your current windows into one tabbed window. Safari resizes each tab depending on the number you have open. You can bookmark a set of tabs or revert to the tabs that were open when you last closed or quit Safari.

Maybe the text field you’re typing in is a bit too small to read. Or maybe you just have a lot to say. Either way, Safari lets you resize text fields on any website, just by grabbing the corner of the field. Resize a field and the web page reflows to make room.
